Hi, as the proud parents of three great dogs - two of whom are pitbulls - we got really fed up with the bad press the breed receives and public reaction to our sweet, friendly, non-aggressive pits; so we started Good To The Bone LLC - www.goodtothebone.net
We make t shirts, bumper stickers, coffee cups, ect.. with a pitbull positive message, designed to create a more positive association with the breed. We've had a booth at a lot of all-breed and even some non dog-specific events and have found that most of the people that don't like and are scared of pitbulls have never met one. We've changed a lot of people's minds about the breed by bringing our dogs to these events, which is so important these days with breed bans popping up all over! We've found that wearing our shirts and having the bumper stickers on the car often invites the conversation with the public and creates more opportunities to raise breed awareness.
But the latest concern is about flea biting:
Lucy flea bites the bedspread, my robe, her toys - when she is being petted. I thought that was her little idiosyncratic way of expressing her joy. Has done this since she was a small pup. BUT now she has started to flea bite her tail - a very precise vertical line of no fur.

Is flea biting a pretty common thing for APBTs to do? I have started to put Pet Wrap on her tail but do you have any other advice?

Thanks,
Rollande

One of the people she is with hits her for stuff like pooping in his room, or sometimes just "playing around" slapping her "in jest". Her feeding, watering/pooping schedule is something erratic. They are depending on one of their girlfriends to come between classes to do the midday walking/feeding because they work from 11 to 7. Sometimes the girlfriend is not able to get there, and I think Cali might be locked in her cage the whole time without food or water. I know they do not pee or poop in their cages, so I assume she might have to hold it in til whenever someone can get her sometimes. How much time should a pit bull spend outside? How many hours a day TOTAL should they be spending in a crate? Is it ever acceptable to strike a dog? What should the non-violent owner to to fix this situation? The dog is very nice now, can she turn violent in the future? Thanks.

I'm not sure what all it will entail, as yet, because I'm sure that this thing will mutate and change before anything is set in stone, but as of right now it will be a Hair/Fashion show, also with speakers and demos by some big names in the dog training/behavior/rescue world. Possibly with a second event attached that will involve haircuts and dog grooming.

There will be two rescue org's that will get the fundage, one will definately be Bad Rap, and the other will either be Milo or Rocket Dog, although I am leaning towards rocket dog because I think they need the help more.

Are there any other bay area hair stylists in this tribe?

THe other night, the salon I work for did a benefit for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. From 3-8, we charged $35/haircut, and 100% went to the foundation. It was such a wonderful experience, and it made me realize that hair stylists really have more power to help the world than I ever thought possible. Just think, if every salon in the US did something like that once a year...out of 280,000 salons, the possibilities are endless.

Ok, I digressed. Back on point: it felt really wonderful, and I was wondering if there were any hair stylists on here who would be interested in doing something similar for a pit bull rescue org.
I've recently adopted a 3-4 yr. old pit, and she is hands down, the sweetest, gentlest, people dog I've been around. But she flips out when she is around other dogs. She stands upright (she could be part boxer), her muscles tense to the point of quivering, the hairs on her back stand up, and she sometimes crys or barks (and she never crys or barks when not around other dogs). I was told that she may not be aggressive, but just poorly socialized. whatever the case, is this something that can be trained out of her? I am hopeful because she is very smart and a quick learner, but I understand that adult dog aggression can be a very difficult thing to manage.

I understand that APBTs are quite energetic by nature, and was wondering if any of you have had experience raising one in an apartment or house with no yard. If you have, what are some of the things I should be wary of?

I currently live in a large-ish apartment (with no fenced yard) with a large balcony on the second floor. I work a standard 9-5, so the dog would be left alone in the house (plus balcony) for 8 hours a day, 4 days a week. I plan to take it to doggy day care once a week, in order to provide a full day during the week for play, while promoting friendliness with other dogs.

I really want to get one but I can also see this being a bad arrangement.
For instance, what are the chances that my apartment will be destroyed when I come back from work (with a fairly well-trained adult dog of this breed)? Also, is it possible that he/she might jump off my balcony?
i'd appreciate any advice.

She's spayed, housetrained and seems healthy. She handles new people/places/sights & sounds very well and has done well with a couple of new commands. (she was 2 when she moved in with me, and is three, now)

I guess I just need advice on what to do, I'm at a loss. My apartment doesn't have a yard where she can get up to an all out run, and all the pit info I've been reading lately says "don't let your pit off-leash in public, don't go to dog parks, but DO let them have an all out run for at least an hour per day." Also, I have bad knees, so taking her for a jog is also out of the question, unfortunately.

Right now her exercise consists of about 1 hr total walking or wrestling per day (but not necesarily all at once), and a 3-5 hour "urban hike" around Berkeley once a week. I don't have a car, so it's hard for me to get to any regional parks (does anyone know if Pet Taxi's will take people to those places?).

Do any other full-time job, super exhausted pit bully owners with no back yards have any suggestions? I love my girl more than anyone else in the world, and I just want her to be happy. My first instinct is to cut back my hours at work, but anyone who lives in the SF Bay Area knows how difficult that would be. Help?

So, I came home from work last Thursday and my hubby said "Lola, we have a baby now".

We've had Lua for one week today.

For a puppy, I can't believe how GOOD she is. The vet thinks she is 3 months or less because she barely has teeth. She is almost 30 pounds!

She only barks or cries when there is someone suspicious around or if she's REALLY upset.

She's pretty good at coming when we call her, though she is unsure of her name still.

She was begging last night, and we gave her a "time out" in the kitchen. Today, she did not beg for food and sat quietly at my hubby's feet waiting for us to finish eating calmly...so we did give her a "treat" in her bowl when we were done eating.

She has not had ONE accident inside the house! And I've already had to leave her alone for 8 hours. I totally expected something, but when we got home, she just wagged her tail ran outside and did her thing on the lawn. She is allowed to roam the kitchen and living room of our house (she's not allowed in our bedroom or bathroom).

We definitely need a bed/crate for her, I think, because she needs her "own place" and unfortunately, she thinks the couch is it.

But, at the same time, she doesn't chew or scratch the couch, but lies quietly with her head on one of our laps.

When my husband tells her to get off the couch, she is a little confused because I really believe that she thinks the couch is HER bed, but she eventually will get down and settle by our feet.

Question:

How many people allow their pits on the couch and has it been a problem ever?

And, since she is teething, she is a little "mouthy" like any puppy...but being that her mouth is gonna get bigger than the average dog's, how do you all teach your pits to not bite?

Lua does not have all her shots yet, but when she does, I want to socialize her....how have your experiences with socializing a pit bull with other dogs been?

BAY AREA HUMANE ORGANIZATIONS
OFFER FREE SPAY/NEUTER SURGERIES
FOR PIT BULLS AND PIT BULL MIXES

“Pit Fix Day 2005” to take place Saturday, March 26, 2005
7:00AM to 12 Noon at four major Bay Area humane organizations

WHAT:
Bay Area humane organizations are offering free spay/neuter surgeries on “Pit Fix Day 2005.” With a goal of 100 spay/neuter surgeries in the Bay Area, The East Bay SPCA, The San Francisco SPCA, Peninsula Humane Society and Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation are providing free spay/neuter surgeries to help curb the problem of pit bull overpopulation. The event is designed to encourage owners to spay or neuter their pit bulls and pit bull mixes.

While Bay Area communities have made great progress in decreasing overall animal euthanasia rates, pit bull overpopulation still remains a significant problem. Pit bulls represent the majority of dogs still being killed in Bay Area shelters due to lack of space. Pit Fix Day is just one of the many ways in which Bay Area animal welfare organizations work together to ensure that these animals don’t die needlessly.
WHEN: Saturday, March 26, 2005
Surgeries scheduled from 7:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
WHERE/PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS: The East Bay SPCA
Also offering free microchipping, free nail trimming, discounts on harnesses and head collars and free choke collar/prongs trade-ins to pit owners

San Mateo, CA 94401
2890 Mitchell Drive (at the corner of Oak Grove Road)
Walnut Creek, CA 94598
Also offering free nail trimming and $25 microchipping (includes registration)
COST: FREE!
PUBLIC INFO: Appointments are necessary. To participate, pit bulls must be healthy and meet specific intake requirements.
Two Pit Bulls Rescue Woman From Red Chow

Tue Apr 12, 5:39 PM ET Strange News - AP

OMAHA, Neb. - Two dogs whose breed has a reputation for being mean played the roles of rescuers for a woman who was being attacked by another dog.

A red chow was on top of Angie Pecoraro, 22, in her yard on Monday when two pit bulls jumped over a fence and fought off the chow, Nebraska Humane Society spokeswoman Pam Wiese said.

Witnesses said the chow had bitten Pecoraro several times on her hands, arms and stomach, Wiese said.

An ambulance took Pecoraro to a hospital, where she was treated and released, Wiese said.

The Humane Society impounded the chow, and its owner was ticketed for not having the dog restrained and for harboring a dangerous animal. It will be quarantined to make sure it doesn't have rabies, Wiese said.

My last dog was a Jack Russell Terrier. I've been told JRT's are more aggressive (but less menacing due to their size) than pit bulls.

Also, a friend of mine has a pit bull (keep forgetting to ask which kind...staffordshire, or American, etc) and it NEVER SHEDS! She has the silkiest smooth hair, it shorts and it doesn't seem to shed. My friend swears she never sheds. I have a slight allergy to dogs and the least amount of shedding and dander, the better (and I don't want a sissy poodle or other traditional "non-shedding" dog...what's the point?). I can live with a certain amount of dog dander.

Anyone else have an experience like this with their dog not shedding at all?

What has your overall experience with owning a pit bull been like?

I am reaching out in every direction possible on this one. And maybe you can't help, but know someone who can, I am just hoping to reach someone who can save the lveis of these dogs.

I was out walking my dog a few nights ago when two stray pit bulls came up to us. They are very friendly, so I took them home to figure out what to do with them. Unfortunately, my dog is very small and only has three legs, so she could not hold her own with them, therefore, I could not keep them until i found a home for them.

They are a VERY VERY VERY friendly pair of male pit bulls. Cropped Ears, but their tails are not docked, they have full wagging tails - and they wag them often and profusely! VERY VERY friendly. The smaller dog is a golden brown with a white chest and white paw tips. The larger dog is a black and brown brindle with white around the nose and on the paw tips. These dogs are VERY FRIENDLY! They stayed together and obviously get along very well. Found in Natomas, off San Juan and Bridgeford.

As of Thursday, August 26, 2004, they were taken to the Sacramento City Shelter. They have 5 days there unless claimed or adopted before they will be put to sleep. Even if these are not your dogs, but you are interested in adopting a very friendly Pit Bull, please contact the Sacramento City Shelter about these guys picked up on Rio Loma Way.
I have pictures of them online, you can see them here: http://photobucket.com/albums/v209/drchickon/2%20Pits%20Bulls/

Pets and Animals
---------------------------------------------------------------

Ten Things You Should Never Give Your Pet
Dr. Karen Halligan, Director of Veterinary Services, spcaLA

Having worked in emergency for numerous years and have seen pets given all kinds of foods and drinks. An easy rule of thumb, if it isn’t particularly healthy for you, it most likely is not good for your cat or dog. Some pets will eat almost anything, so pet owners need to be careful or they could end up in the local emergency room. The following are ten bad things to give your pets.

1. Make no bones about it -- bones are bad for animals! Every year countless numbers of animals end up in the emergency room from being given bones by their owners, usually as a treat. The fact is that dogs are omnivores, not carnivores and most dogs and cats cannot tolerate bones. They can splinter or lodge in the intestinal tract with disastrous results, usually requiring surgery. They can also get stuck in their mouth or throat, which is just as dangerous. All bones are bad, including pork, chicken and beef. The next time you feel the urge to give your dog a bone, just make sure it’s a milk bone or a nylabone. Your pet will love you for it.

2. Chocolate can be lethal to pets because it contains theobromine which causes increased heart rate, central nervous system stimulation and constriction of arteries. Clinical symptoms range from vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, and excitability to cardiac failure, seizures and death. This can occur as quickly as four to six hours after ingestion. Baking chocolate is the worst because it contains the highest amount of theobromine. A potential lethal dose is only one pound of chocolate in a 16-pound dog. If your pet has gotten into chocolate you should contact your veterinarian immediately.

3. Alcohol is also very bad for cats and dogs. It doesn’t take much alcohol to intoxicate a pet. Animals will stagger and bump into things, hurting themselves, and it also causes them to urinate uncontrollably. In high doses, alcohol will suppress the central nervous, respiratory and cardiac systems and can lead to death. It is best to just give your pet water.

4. Milk is also not good for animals because many of them are lactose intolerant and will develop diarrhea. Pets often lack the enzyme that is required to break down the sugar in milk and this can cause them to develop vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Even though they like it, especially cats, refrain from giving your pets milk.

5. Ham and other salty meats and foods are very dangerous to pets. In addition to being high in fat, they are also very salty which can cause serious stomach ache or pancreatitis. Also, large breeds of dogs that eat salty food may drink too much water and develop a life-threatening condition called “bloat.” This is where the stomach fills up with gas and within several hours may twist causing the pet to die. Please avoid giving ham and salty foods to your pets.

6. Onions are toxic to pets. They contain allyl propyl disulfide, which damages their red blood cells and can cause fatal consequences in animals. They may become anemic, weak and have trouble breathing. The best thing to do if your pet ingests onions is to get them to the vet right away.

7. Caffeine is also bad for pets. It contains methylated xanthine that, like chocolate, stimulates the central nervous and cardiac systems and within several hours can cause vomiting, restlessness, heart palpitations and even death. So make sure your pets stay away from that early morning brew.

8. Avocados are also bad for pets. First, they are really high in fat and can cause stomach upset, vomiting and even a pancreatitis. Second, the pit is also toxic and can get lodged in the intestinal tract leading to a severe blockage, which may require surgery.

9. It may come as a surprise to many that tuna fish is bad for cats. Feline’s heart muscle requires an amino acid called taurine to maintain normal strength and function. Regular tuna fish for humans does not have this amino acid and cats that eat too much tuna fish will develop heart problems. If you want to give your cats that taste of tuna that they love, just make sure it is tuna fish for cats which has this amino acid added.

10. The latest study has found that raisins and grapes can lead to kidney failure in pets. Small dogs can also choke on grapes so it is best to just make sure that your pets eat a will balanced diet that is formulated for their life stage.

Animal Assisted Therapy
Volunteers take their animals to hospitals and convalescent homes to bring a little more love into the lives of the patients there.

Shelters
Volunteers are needed in our shelters to assist customers wanting to adopt pets, help people find their lost pets, socialize, groom, clean, bathe, and brush the animals, in addition to cleaning the kennels.

Fostering
When very young puppies or kittens come into our shelters, they often have a slim chance of survival. Foster parents help by providing a temporary home to the youngsters until they're ready to be adopted into permanent homes.

Fundraising
Volunteers work with the Fund Development Department on programs and special events to raise money to support our efforts for animals.

Humane Education
Volunteers give presentations at schools, civic organizations and clubs on proper pet care and the importance of spaying and neutering.

Mobile Adoption
Through our Mobile Adoption Program, volunteers help take dogs and cats to attractive public sites throughout the community, care for the animals on site and help screen potential adopters to ensure that our pets are placed into caring and loving homes.

Special Projects
There are often short term assignments that volunteers can do for us such as research projects, clerical assistance, graphic design work, etc.

They provide safe shelter, food, medical care and love for stray and homeless animals seven days a week. We need volunteers to assist staff in caring for these wonderful animals. Volunteers enrich all the lives they touch - both animal and human.

I've had my pitty (I think she's an AmStaff, actually) for about a year, and she was rescued from a house in Oakland where she'd been chained to a tree and left to rot. She was about 1-1.5 years old when I got her, and was unfixed (which I changed immediately). For the first 6 months I had her, she was great with all other dogs - she wanted to play with them all and didn't get in fights (unless another dog started it). We were at the dog park every day and she was the flirt of the place.

Last summer, over the course of about 2 months, she started getting more aggressive towards other dogs. She's still great with dogs she already knows, but almost always tries to start a fight with new dogs. It was really a total 180. I'm looking into aggression classes around the city, but what i've heard over and over is that this change is really typical for pits when they hit sexual maturity, around 2-3 years old. She's still a complete sweetheart to people - no aggression there at all. Anyone go through this, and what did you try that worked/didn't work?

thanks!
